Ugochi Emenogu Onyegbule always wanted to work with mathematics. TMU opened the door to applications in finance and economics. Before she had even completed her PhD, the Bank of Canada hired her, and Ugochi started work as a federal economist just four days after defending her PhD. Her work now informs government policy decisions that impact all Canadians.
What is it like to work as a senior economist?
I create models that the government uses to make decisions about the economy. For example, I look at how interest rate changes and household lending rules affect house prices, people’s ability to get a mortgage, and many other correlations.
How did your degree prepare you?
Economics at my level requires strong mathematical skills. My master’s program gave me that strong foundation. The courses, training and support were excellent. With a math degree under my belt, transitioning into economics was easy. What I learned is still helping me now.
Do you have fond memories as a TMU student?
It was a really positive experience, with good friends up to today. We studied, dined together and supported each other! We’re still in constant communication — like family now. Since graduating, I’ve given back through events and student talks about career prospects.
Advice for next-generation students?
So many hot careers revolve around math. Even if you don’t know exactly where to head, get a math degree. After that, so many options open up, and you can easily move forward into a field of application.
